Imprisoned since 2003, Amnesty International noted Zapata was serving a sentence of at least 25 years for such crimes as disrespect, public disorder and resistance against the Communist government.
Senator Bill Nelson of Florida calls Zapata's death "a sad reminder of the tragic cost of oppression and a dictatorship that devalues human life."
Kathy and Kids went to Cuba last week.
Obviously we like the place or we wouldn't visit every year and write a book about it. The trip was a disaster. Just like Cubans, they were stuck in an airport, bus and fleabag hotel for over 30 hours. No food, no diapers, toilet paper or tampons - almost no water. Cockroaches and solied sheets in their emergency hotel rooms. I got a text message (first time from Cuba) telling me she was imprisoned in Cuba and couldn't get home. But it wasn't a joke.
This is how Cubans live year round, but don't get to leave.
Babalu has a great angle on this.

Agencia Efe (news agency) was organized in Havana in the '80s. From that time I keep good friends there. One of them leaked the letter to José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero addressed to Fidel Castro. They quote from it without removing or adding a comma.
Dear and admired President, my Commander:
The foreign minister of my Government (Spanish ed.), Miguel Angel Moratinos, is on his official trip to Cuba and informs me of the favorable evolution of the health of Your Excellency. Not sure how I'm celebrating because my generation has been raised with an eye to communist Cuba and the unique figure of Fidel Castro, sentinel of freedom, leader of the Caribbean by the grace of historic destiny and commander of the armies of Earth, Air and Sea Pearl of the Antilles.
The new hedonistic generations, have no clear understanding of what the world has brought to Your Excellency; the fight for freedom, for human rights and social policy, all against the ravenous Empire (USA?), against the unspeakable blockade imposed by the United States. Despite this historical outrage, Cuba is today thanks to you, a paradise of freedom, a just nation where respect and obeyance of the laws derived from public will freely expressed in a free and hopeful country that enjoys a high standard of living, with all your cities having replaced the obsolete sign of the cross for the sickle and hammer.
Minister Moratinos has been in awe at the progress and happiness of Cuban citizenship. Certainly the depravity of the foreign tourist has forced the Government of Your Excellency to keep the streets to the hustlers but the vast majority of the new generation is living happily, embedded in the forefront of youth what is admirable is the organization of the pioneers (youth organization).
I instructed my Minister to not advocate for so-called 'political prisoners', which are nothing but mercenaries hired by a foreign power, traitors or terrorists who seek to undermine the foundations of the glorious Revolution, the achievements by Your Excellency, as demonstrated to the world to respect human rights and freedoms.
Only the far-right failure Aznar (former spanish President) could promote to the decadent Europeeans the fascist position to take action against the regime of Your Excellency. Naturally I have decided to re-establish a privileged relationship with the democratic government of Your Excellency.
I also instructed my minister not to attend to the dissidents, ridiculous resentful minorities, unable to comprehend the greatness of the revolution that you, homeland or death, has completed. Within two years, my Commander, there will be 50 years of access to the State leadership of Your Excellency. I intend to go to Havana, accompanied by my Government to pay tribute to you on behalf of all the Democrats in the world. A half-century, 50 years, winning one after another exemplary democratic elections that were held in your country, which was once trampled by Spain's infamous colonials, Catholic and inquisitors, is unprecedented event.
I take this letter, sir, to beg you to grant me the great honor of allowing Spain to join the Castro-Chavez axis Evo, which has permanent hatred of the United States and its fascist president, the wretched Bush. I look forward to welcome news, I reiterate, my commander, my desire and the Spanish people for your speedy recovery and I am as always at the beck and Your Excellency's renewed my admiration and my continuing desire to continue receiving your lessons.
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is Currently President of Spain.
